ABIODUN OLAKU
BIOGRAPHY
Abiodun Olaku, born in Lagos on 29th of December, 1958, comes from Abeokuta, Ogun state. His love for art can be traced back to his early days at Baptist Academy, Lagos, between 1970 and 1975. He rode on the back of the school’s tradition, which encouraged art and craft through a sustained retinue of qualified, committed and motivating teachers in that segment of the educational curriculum.
He proceeded to the Yaba College of Technology, as a painter in 1981, under the supervision and guidance of Prof. Yusuf Grillo, Kolade Oshinowo and the late Dr. Isiaka Osunde. Abiodun Olaku has crystallised into one of the ‘exclusive’ masters of his generation.
He was a cultural officer in the civil service with the National Gallery of Modern Art, 1982-89 and a guest-lecturer between 1994-1996 in his alma mater. Olaku’s professional experience includes administrative, mentoring, curatorial, entrepreneurial and consulting activities.
Following his resignation from the civil service in February 1989, and now an independent full-time artist, his studio practice gained significant momentum, as he continued harmonious camaraderie with a few of his colleagues & friends like Alex Shyngle (late), Felix Osiemi and Bunmi Babatunde, as well as respected senior sculptors like Bisi Fakeye (late) & Monday Akhidue (late), at The National Studios of Modern Art, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
Abiodun Olaku is a Fellow of the Society of Nigeria Artists (SNA); a founding member, inaugural Vice-President and Trustee of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA); and one of the founders and Trustee of Universal Studios of Art, National Theatre, Lagos. He continues to train, mentor and inspire younger generations of Nigerian Artists, and also consults widely on professional art matters, among other activities.
Described by his lecturer, mentor and inspiration, late Professor Yusuf Grillo, as “Primus inter pares,” Abiodun Olaku has slowly but steadily transformed, through a 43-year artistic sojourn, into an internationally-renowned artist, with his work being a regular feature in foremost international auctions, like Bonhams, Sotheby’s, Arthouse Contemporary, etc, and generating a frenzied desire among top collectors, patrons, and aficinados alike.
To his credit, he has participated in over 150 group & joint exhibitions, while his 4th solo exhibition is scheduled for sometime 2024.
Olaku is married, with children. He is based in Lagos, Nigeria.
